Why it’s so important to find a bra that fits.

It is no secret that when a woman’s clothes are the right size and fit, the more flattering they look. The same holds true for her bra. And while a brassiere of proper size and fit will complement her figure, it also provides comfort and support. Whether you have had breast surgery, are considering it, or are happy staying put, wearing the right size bra matters—but unfortunately, most women underestimate the power of the bra. Below we discuss the importance of finding a bra that fits.

Post-Operative Bra: The use of a post-surgical bra following breast surgery (augmentation, lift, reduction) is for both support and compression. Providing good support is more important than excessive compression. The ‘support’ will decrease post-operative pain and discomfort, reduce early stress on the skin closures, and help reduce dependent swelling within the breast. The ‘compression’ helps to reduce swelling and enhance its resolution. It is recommended that patients wear post-op support and compression for 4-5 weeks following surgery. Patients can begin wearing an underwire bra after swelling has subsided, the inframammary skin closures are healed, and the implants have settled.

Day-to-Day Bra: Sagging of breasts is, for most, an inevitable fact of life. However, a well fitted bra that provides proper support eliminates the gravitational pull, keeping the ladies lifted longer. And while most women believe the support is in the straps, the fact is, 90% of the support is in the band. As a general rule, the firmness should be on the loosest hook of your band so that the band sits level on your back, so you can adjust to the tighter hooks as the band stretches out. And wearing the right size is important! Every woman should get a professional bra fitting at least once a year.

Athletic Bra: When exercising, wearing a sports bra that provides proper support is critical, especially for runners or those high-impact aerobic exercises. Without the right bra, over time all that movement can stretch out your ligaments and break down connective tissue, causing accelerated sagging. Just make sure the elastic material is not worn out, because if it is, the bra is no longer doing its job.

For comfort, support and a good faith effort in the fight against gravity, be sure to find a bra, or two, the is perfect for you. However, if the right fitted bra still isn’t giving you the look you want, plastic surgery might be something to consider.
