If turning back the hands of time is something you’re looking to do, now’s the time to learn about Botox, the ultimate facial refresher.

The lines on our faces, large or small, mean so much more than just wrinkles. From crows’ feet that have settled after years of laughs and smiles, to the forehead grooves created by looks of shock or anger, over time these lines become a permanent fixture to our faces. For some, the alteration is a welcomed sign of character, but for others it is a sign of aging or exhaustion, which they could happily do without. If you find yourself unhappy with the presence of lines, furrows and wrinkles on your face, Botox is the answer.

The pores in our skin are tiny, and while creams and lotions promise to reverse the signs of aging, the molecules that make up these serums are simply too large to penetrate the skin, much less iron out those wrinkles. As a result, they do nothing more than rest on the surface. Administered by needle injection in order to properly penetrate the skin’s surface, Botox is guaranteed to soften, or even erase the appearance of lines on the faces.

Botox injections are made along the forehead, the corners of your outer eye area, and that pesky spot between the eyes, just above the nose. Treatment takes about fifteen minutes and can be performed in the office. The Botox solution is customarily diluted so that the result is not overwhelmingly dramatic. The effects of Botox begin to take shape within 4-5 days of receiving treatment. Of course, every patient has a different response to Botox, but it is guaranteed to work to some degree for everybody, and once the effects take place, the patient should notice a more youthful, smooth appearance to the areas treated.

Some view Botox as a preventative measure, while others think that the time for Botox is when the lines and wrinkles become visible. While it’s true that the only way to stop the further progression of lines and wrinkles is to stop the movement, the real answer is that the right time for Botox is when that you feel you are ready.

The best thing, and the worst thing about Botox is that it’s temporary, lasting approximately 3-4 months. If you’re not pleased with the outcome, you can at least find comfort in the fact that it won’t last forever. However, if you love the results, it is recommended to stack your treatments, receiving a follow-up within 3-4 months of the last. If used on a regular basis for the first 3 to 4 treatments, the results will begin to last longer, approximately 5-6 months, as the muscles shrink and develop disuse atrophy, keeping the skin smoother, longer.

While only in use for less than 20 years, Botox has given patients the ability to soften the appearance of facial lines, and maintain a youthful look, without going under the knife. When performed correctly, results are subtle, but life changing, and often leaving anyone who hasn’t had it wanting to know more. In fact, Dr. Madda recently had the pleasure of sitting down with The Sister Project, a trio of savvy sibling bloggers, for an in-depth discussion on the treatment.
